Kernels and Chiefs suspended after rain

Kernels are leading 6-2 in the 4th inning. Game will resume May 18 at Peoria.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - Thursday night's game between the Kernels and Peoria Chiefs was suspended due to rain and wet grounds with the Kernels leading 6-2 in the fourth inning. The game will resume on Monday, May 18 in Peoria at 5:00 p.m. A seven-inning game will follow the completion of the suspended game.

The game was tied 2-2 after one inning. Peoria jumped in front 2-0 with a RBI singles by Nick Thompson and Steve Bean in the first inning. The Kernels countered and tied the game in the bottom of the first inning. Nick Gordon's RBI single scored Tanner English, who led off the game with a triple. Gordon scored on Zack Larson's RBI sacrifice fly.

The Kernels scored four times in the second inning, taking a 6-2 advantage. Rainis Silva doubled to begin the inning, later scoring on Blake Schmit's RBI sacrifice fly. English then walked, and Gordon reached on an error to put two men on.

Trey Vavra launched a three-run home run to left center, putting Cedar Rapids up by four runs. It is Vavra's fourth of the season.

Stephen Gonsalves started for the Kernels, allowing two runs in four innings. Dewin Perez allowed six runs (three earned) over three innings.

The Kernels host the Quad Cities River Bandits, the Midwest League affiliate of the Houston Astros, on Friday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Michael Cederoth (1-2, 3.75) starts for the Kernels against RHP Brandon McNitt (0-0, 9.00)
