Drillers outlast Cardinals, 1-0, in 17-inning marathon

May 20, 2015

Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers outlasted the Springfield Cardinals, 1-0, in a 17-inning marathon game before 3,311 fans at Hammons Field on Tuesday night. The 17-inning game is the 2nd-longest in Springfield Cardinals history, only trailing the 20-inning game against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals on 5/11/13.

A pitchers duel from start to finish, the two teams alternated scoreless inning after scoreless inning through the first 16 frames. On the Cardinals (12-26) side, RHP Nick Petree made the start and posted seven scoreless stanzas, blanking the Drillers (17-20) for his second straight start. He struck out five through his outing, allowing only five hits and one walk in the no-decision.

After Petree, the Cardinals received nine innings of scoreless relief. RHP Ronnie Shaban dealt the eighth, before two scoreless innings from RHP Kyle Barraclough. RHP Corey Baker dominated the Drillers with seven strikeouts through three hitless and scoreless stanzas, before RHP Chris Thomas contributed with blank frames in the 14th and 15th. RHP Heath Wyatt (L, 1-2), who entered the game as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 15th and hit a double, stayed in the game and dealt a 1-2-3 top of the 16th.

However, the Drillers found a way onto the board in the top of the 17th against Wyatt and the Cardinals. LF Adam Law started the inning with a single, before moving to second base on a groundout to first from 2B Brandon Dixon. Wyatt struck out RF Steve Smith, who was a relief pitcher playing right field at that point, putting the second out on the board. LF Jeremy Rathjen, though, placed a go-ahead RBI single to shallow left-center field, bringing home Law for the game's first run.

Throughout the game, the Drillers used eight different pitchers on the mound, including 1B Lars Anderson (W, 1-0), who slid from first base to the mound to pitch the 16th inning. Anderson had navigated in scoreless fashion through the 16th, and then followed it with a scoreless bottom of the 17th to close the 1-0 win for Tulsa. Drillers RHP Deck McGuire started the game for Tulsa and pitched the first six scoreless innings before the relief corps took over.
