June 13, 2015

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Memphis Redbirds fell to the division-rival Round Rock Express by a 5-4 score on Saturday night at AutoZone Park in front of a season-high 7,661 fans.

With the loss, the Redbirds fell to 33-30 on the season and 5.0 games behind first-place Round Rock in PCL American Southern Division.

Express starter Anthony Ranaudo collected his league-leading seventh win, holding the Redbirds to two runs over six innings. His lone blemish was a two-run home run by designated hitter Xavier Scruggs in the third inning, who went yard for the second straight night.

First baseman Dan Johnson also had a monster game in the defeat, going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, and two runs batted in.

The Express jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Tyler Pastomicky doubled down the right field line and came home on a Brett Nicholas single.

Scruggs' team-leading 10th blast of the season gave Memphis its only lead of the night at 2-1.

Round Rock moved back ahead with a four-run rally in the fourth inning and didn't look back, highlighted by a Michael Choice double and Jared Hoying two-run homer to center.

Johnson and the Redbirds made the game close with a run in the seventh and ninth innings, beginning with his solo blast onto the right field picnic pavilion. All seven home runs by Johnson this season have been hit at AutoZone Park.

Memphis threatened in the ninth, but stranded the tying run on first base as the game ended. With Dean Anna on second, Johnson blooped a RBI single over the shift to bring the game within one run.

Memphis starter Zach Petrick ended a four-game winning streak with the defeat, giving up five runs on eight hits with three strikeouts over five innings.

Tyler Waldon, Dean Kiekhefer, and Heath Wyatt combined for four frames of scoreless ball in relief.

The Redbirds and Express conclude their four-game series at 6:05pm CT on Sunday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Thomas Lee (NR) will make his Triple-A debut for the Redbirds against left-hander Matt Harrison (1-1, 7.20). Gates open at 5pm.
