Happy Father's Day! Maddens help Legends with first impressions

June 20, 2015

The saying is that you don't get a second chance to make a first impression. McElroy Madden Jr. and Sr. have helped the Lexington Legends make a good first impression on their fans for years.

"Mac" Sr. has been an usher with the Legends since 2001, the team's first season of operation. Mac Jr. has worked primarily in parking for nine seasons.

They've both enjoyed meeting the fans they've helped through the years, including, among the regulars, former UK basketball coach Joe B. Hall.

Meeting major league star Roger Clemens, who pitched in one game for the Legends in 2006, was also a highlight.

The senior Madden worked with the Parks and Recreation Department in Lexington for 45 years, and before that served as a batboy for the Lexington Hustlers, who dominated the local baseball scene in the first half of the 20th century.    Madden Jr. naturally had an interest in sports, as did his sister June, a UK cheerleader in the 1970s.

"I spent a lot of time at the parks with my dad," he said.

                He still does.
