Ports Take Series with 4-1 Win

June 28, 2015

San Bernardino, CA- The Stockton Ports stifled the Inland Empire 66ers on Sunday with a 4-1 win that gave the Oakland Athletics' affiliate a three-games-to-one series victory. Starter Joel Seddon handcuffed the 66ers over seven shutout innings and the bullpen held on as closer Brendan McCurry got his second save in as many nights.

Inland Empire (35-38, 1-3) starter Sean Newcomb pitched well but was charged with a tough-luck loss. The southpaw was touched for just one run in his five innings of work but it was enough to tag him with his first defeat as a California Leaguer as Newcomb fell to 3-1. He gave up five hits and two walks and struck out six batters.

Seddon (5-4) gave a sterling effort for Stockton (41-33, 3-1) as the righty allowed just four hits over seven innings of work. He did not allow a run nor a walk and struck out three batters.

Leading 1-0 heading into the sixth inning, Stockton touched up IE reliever Alan Busenitz as BJ Boyd had an RBI single and the Cal League's top hitter entering play Brett Vertigan followed with a two-run double to make it 4-0.

The 66ers scored their lone run of the game in the eighth inning when Caleb Adams tripled to open the inning against reliever Corey Walter. Two batters later Bo Way drilled an RBI single scoring Adams to make it 4-1. Way had the lone multi-hit game for the 66ers. Inland Empire would threaten in the ninth as Kody Eaves singled off Walter with one out and Roberto Baldoquin reached via an error. The Ports turned to their close McCurry who struck out Angel Rosa and Stephen McGee to end the threat and the game. McCurry now has 14 saves in 15 opportunities.

The 66ers next play on Tuesday in Lancaster at 6:30 pm. The game can be heard live at 66ers.com.
