Rainiers Fend Off Fresno, 7-4

Steve Baron collects three hits, drives in two runs

FRESNO, Calif. -- Steve Baron collected three hits and a pair of RBI as the Tacoma Rainiers bested the Fresno Grizzlies 7-4 at Chukchansi Park on Sunday.

The catcher Baron provided Tacoma an early 2-0 lead after delivering a two-run double with no outs in the top of the third inning. He went on to help stretch the advantage to 3-0 after scoring on a sacrifice fly hit by Stefen Romero two batters later.

After Fresno pulled ahead 4-3 in the fourth, the Rainiers rebounded with a four-run frame in the fifth. Romero evened the score with an RBI double before Carlos Rivero put Tacoma on top for good with a two-out, two-run single. Designated hitter Erik Kratz capped off the inning with an RBI double.

Starter Vidal Nuno (1-0) picked up a win in his first career appearance with the Rainiers. The left-hander held the Grizzlies to four runs on seven hits through 6.0 innings. He struck out six and issued one walk. Relievers Edgar Olmos (2.0) and Logan Kensing (1.0) combined to toss 3.0 scoreless innings, with Kensing picking up his first save of the season following a shutout effort in the ninth.

The Rainiers (42-42) play the third game of the team's four-game series at Fresno (48-36) tomorrow, July 6. Right-hander Forrest Snow (7-4, 2.24) is slated to start for Tacoma. The Grizzlies are expected to counter with right-hander Brady Rodgers (6-4, 4.68). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
