July 20, 2015

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox and the Pacific Coast League have announced that starting pitcher Hiram Burgos has been named the PCL Pitcher of the Week for July 13-19.

Burgos, 27, pitched six scoreless innings Saturday with five strikeouts, leading the Sky Sox to a 2-0 shutout victory at New Orleans. The right-hander scattered three hits and two walks during his 85-pitch outing, and only two of those baserunners reached scoring position. He retired the final six batters he faced, after yielding a lead-off single in the fifth inning. Burgos' win over New Orleans improved his season record to 2-1 with Colorado Springs and lowered his ERA to 3.51. The 27-year-old was assigned to the Sky Sox on June 16, after appearing in five games for Double-A Biloxi.

In six starts with the Sky Sox this season, Burgos is 2-1 with a 3.51 ERA (13 ER/33.1 IP). He joined the club on June 1 6 after making seven starts with Class A Brevard County and five starts with Double-A Biloxi. He went 2-4 with a 4.12 ERA (18 ER/39.1 IP) with Brevard County and 3-0 with a 3.68 ERA (12 ER/29.1 IP) with Biloxi.

The native of Cayey, Puerto Rico, has spent his entire career in the Milwaukee Brewers' organization, having originally been selected by the club in the sixth round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft. The Bethune-Cookman College (Daytona Beach, Florida) alum made his MLB debut with the Brewers in 2013, compiling a 1-2 record and 18 strikeouts. The Pitcher of the Week accolade is the third of his seven-year professional career, with his previous also coming from the PCL in 2012 as a member of the Nashville Sounds. Burgos is the first Sky Sox pitcher to receive a weekly honor since Alex White on July 30, 2012.
