Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short

The Fightin Phils (54-46) scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning but fell short as the Rock Cats (47-52) won 6-5 on Saturday night. Angelo Mora hit a RBI triple while Art Charles hit a pinch-hit sacrifice fly.  

Reading scored three runs off Shane Carle in the top of the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Brian Pointer hit a RBI double with one out to score Angelo Mora, who hit his first AA single. Cameron Perkins hit a RBI single to score Pointer and Brock Stassi hit a RBI single to score JP Crawford. 

New Britain scored two runs off Mark Leiter Jr. (2-5) to cut Reading's lead to 3-2. Mike Tauchman hit a RBI double to score Pat Valaika while Dean Espy hit a RBI single to score Tauchman. The Rock Cats scored three more runs off Leiter in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 5-3 lead as Jordan Patterson hit a two-run double and Dean Espy added a sacrifice fly.  

Leiter Jr. allowed five runs off seven hits and two walks in six innings with four strikeouts. Tom Windle entered the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. Patterson scored on a ball pass in the bottom of the eighth inning to take a 6-3 lead.  

Brock Stassi went 3 for 4, extending his hitting streak to seven games.  

The Fightin Phils will play their final game at New Britain Stadium on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is at 1:35 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 1:05 pm.
