Kernels shutout Snappers, 3-0.

The Kernels look to claim their first rubber game win tomorrow afternoon in the series finale.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids evened the series with Saturday's 3-0 shutout over the Beloit Snappers. The win improved the Kernels record to 13-3 on the year v. Beloit, including a 5-2 mark at home.

Sam Gibbons (4-2) earned the win. The right-hander retired eight in a row at one point and allowed four hits and four walks while striking four over six scoreless innings. Gibbons has now tossed at least six innings in three of his last five starts.

Yorman Landa (2) recorded the hold with two scoreless innings in relief. The right-hander yielded one hit and a pair of walks while striking out three.

Jared Wilson (2) secured the win with his second save. The right-hander allowed one hit and one walk while striking out one in a scoreless top of the ninth.

Heath Fillmyer (1-10) suffered the loss for Beloit (14-15, 40-59). The right-hander allowed three runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out one in 3 2/3 innings pitched.

Cedar Rapids (17-13, 58-42) took a two run lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Nick Gordon recorded the Kernels first hit of the day with a one-out triple to left-center. Edgar Corcino then drew a walk, giving the Kernels runners on the corners. Zack Larson followed Corcino with an RBI single to center, plating Gordon from the third. The RBI for Larson was his team leading 44th of the season. Two batters later, Tyler Kuresa extended the Kernels lead to 2-0 with an RBI single to left, bringing in Corcino from third.

The Kernels extended their lead to 3-0 with a run in the bottom of the second. Austin Diemer recorded the first hit of the inning with a one-out double down the left field line. Sean Miler followed Diemer with an RBI single to center, scoring Diemer from second.

Kuresa led the Kernels with two hits on the night. Kuresa finished the night 2-for-5 with two singles and an RBI. Corcino extended his on-base streak to nine games with a walk in the bottom of the first.

The Kernels conclude a three-game series and six-game homestand tomorrow afternoon v. the Beloit Snappers. First pitch in the series finale is at 6:35 p.m. from Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. LHP Luke Westphal (1-2, 2.86) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Daniel Gossett (3-10 4.94) counters for Beloit.

The homestand wraps up on Sunday, July 26th, with Run the Bases Sunday, presented by Jimmy John's and media sponsor 104.5 KDAT.
