Victor Roache Named Southern League Player of the Week
BILOXI, MS - On Monday morning, the Southern League of Professional Baseball Clubs announced that Shuckers' 23-year-old outfielder Victor Roache has earned Player of the Week honors for July 20 through July 26. Roache has been a catalyst at the plate for Biloxi during the current three-game winning streak, batting .474 (9x19) with seven extra-base hits and four multi-hit contests in the five-game series victory at Pensacola.
Hitting an even .400 last week, the highest average among players with seven games played, Roache either led or tied for the league lead with 10 hits, seven extra-base hits, 21 total bases, five doubles, two homeruns, seven RBI and an .840 slugging percentage. The Tampa native posted four games with more than one hit and an extra base. Roache capped his week with a pair of stellar games on July 25 and 26. Over the two contests, both Biloxi wins at Pensacola, the Georgia Southern University product went 5-for-8 with three runs scored, two doubles, a homerun and three RBI.
Roache batted just .148 (4x27) over his first seven Biloxi games, but has rebounded by hitting .311 (23x74) over his last 22 games with six doubles, two triples, four homeruns and 16 RBI. Overall Roache is batting .267 with seven doubles, two triples, five home runs and 17 RBI in 29 games for the Shuckers.
Drafted by Milwaukee in the first round (28th overall) in 2012, Roache leads the Brewers farm system with 15 homeruns and began the season will Advanced-A Brevard County of the Florida State League, being named a midseason All-Star.
This is Roache's second career weekly award after the Florida State League named him Player of the Week on July 14 of last year. Roache joins teammate Orlando Arcia (5/25-5/31) as being the second Shucker to be named Player of the Week. Pitchers Brooks Hall (6/8-6/14) and Brent Suter (6/15-6/21) were named Southern League Pitcher of the Week this season.
Mississippi Braves LHP Andrew Barbosa was named Southern League Pitcher of the Week. During the week, Barbosa went 2-0 and allowed no runs in two starts for the M-Braves. He gave up just six hits in 11 innings of work. Barbosa walked two and struck out 10.
Roache and the entire Biloxi Shuckers roster begin a five-game homestand tomorrow against the Jackson Generals (SEA) at MGM Park. The series continues through Saturday, August 1. The homestand features a special appearance by the ZOOperstars on Friday!
