Captains Pound Loons For Series Sweep

(Eastlake, OH) -The Lake County Captains completed a 5-1 home stand with a 15-7 throttling of the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday evening. The Loons jumped out to an early 5-1 lead before the Captains came roaring back with fourteen runs over a three inning span. With the win the Captains not only swept the Loons they also won their fifth straight game and their eighth in a row over the Loons at Classic Park.   

Great Lakes would score first with two unearned runs in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jimmy Allen would drive in the first run of the game on a ground ball to third base that was misplayed by Taylor Murphy for a fielding error. Federico Celli would follow with a bases loaded walk to give the Loons a 2-0 lead.                                                                                                     

In the bottom of the fourth the Captains would get one back. With two outs Bobby Bradley drew a walk to snap a streak of ten straight retired by Loons' starter Luis De Paula. Murphy would then also walk to put runners at first and second. Francisco Mejia then singled to rightfield to score Bradley from second to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The Loons would push their lead out to 5-1 with three more runs in the top of the fifth inning. All the runs would come with one sing of the bat. With two on base and one out, Justin Chigbogu launched a three run homerun. It was his third homerun in as many games.

The Captains wasted little time grabbing the lead for good. They would score seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning after sending eleven men to the plate. The highlights of the inning were an RBI double from Bradley and a three run homerun for Yu-Cheng Chang. It was the second straight game that Chang has blasted a three run homerun. It also extended his hitting streak to eight straight games and his on base streak to sixteen in a row.

Lake County was not done scoring as they would add seven more run over the sixth and seventh innings. In the sixth inning Yonathan Mendoza would draw a bases loaded walk while hitting for Taylor Murphy who has been ejected in the fifth inning. Later in the inning Chang would deliver again with a two run single. Chang set a new career high with five runs batted in.  

Great Lakes would add two runs in the top of the seventh inning but would not threaten again the rest of the game.

Thomas Pannone started the game and got a no decision in 4.0 innings of work. He allowed 2 unearned runs on just 1 hit. He walked 3 and struck out 5. Justin Garcia (2-0) earned the win on 1.0 inning of relief. He allowed 3 runs, all earned, on 4 hits. Garcia walked 1 and struck out 1. Caleb Hamrick then went 1.1 innings. He allowed 2 runs, both earned, on 4 hits. Hamrick walked 2 and struck out 1. Nick Pasquale followed with 1.2 innings of relief. He allowed no runs on just 1 hit. He did not walk a batter and struck out 1. Cameron Hill then went the final inning in relief. Hill allowed 1 hit and struck out 1.

In the win the Captains set a new season high by drawing eleven walks in the game.

The Captains will now be off on Monday before beginning a six game Western division road trip on Tuesday night. The Captains will start a three game series in Peoria with an 8:00pm start time on Tuesday. Jordan Milbrath will get the start for the Captains.
