Hudson Valley Drops Series Opener to Staten Island

Wappingers Falls, NY (8/27/15)- The Hudson Valley Renegades were defeated by the Staten Island Yankees by a score of 4-2 on Thursday evening at Dutchess Stadium.

In the top of the third inning, Staten Island right fielder Jhalan Jackson and catcher Eduardo de Oleo each singled to lead off the inning. Designated hitter Zack Zehner brought home Jackson on a RBI single and de Oleo scored on a RBI ground out from center fielder Jeff Hendrix, giving Staten Island a 2-0 lead.

Hudson Valley cut the Yankees lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the fourth as designated hitter Hector Montes led off the inning with a double and scored on a RBI single from center fielder Angel Moreno.

Staten Island scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning as Hendrix singled with one out and scored on a RBI triple from left fielder Trey Amburgey. Third baseman Kevin Cornelius brought home Amburgery with a two-out RBI single to extend the Yankees lead to 4-1.

Staten Island's starting pitcher Domingo Acevedo (2-0) tossed six innings in the winning effort has he allowed one run off five hits.

The Renegades closed the gap to 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning as second baseman Oscar Sanay singled to right field and scored when left fielder Joe McCarthy hit a stand-up RBI double to left center field. But Staten Island's closer Michael Schaub closed the game out to pick up his fifth save of the season.

Roel Ramirez (3-3) took the loss for the Renegades as he allowed four runs and three earned runs in six innings of work. Tomas Michelson tossed the final three innings for Hudson Valley and did not allow a run while striking out a pair.

With the result, the Renegades saw their record fall to 32-32 while Staten Island improved to 34-30.

Notes: Joe McCarthy reached base all five times he came to the plate on Thursday evening as the Scranton, Pennsylvania native went three-for-three with a pair of walks. That was McCarthy's 11th multi-hit game of the season and has now extended his hit streak to five consecutive games, where he has hit .477 (9-19) with four RBI during that span

Hudson Valley travels to face Staten Island on Friday, August 28th with first pitch set for 7:00pm.
