Rancho Edged By Giants in Extra-Inning Thriller

Quakes drop third straight game; sixth straight against San Jose
August 30, 2015

Rancho Cucamonga remains winless against San Jose this season, falling 7-6 in 11 innings before another sold-out crowd at LoanMart Field on Saturday night.

With 4,792 fans watching, the Giants (39-23, 69-63) grabbed the upper-hand in the top of the 11th inning against Quakes' reliever Karch Kowalczyk (1-2). Aramis Garcia drew a leadoff walk and was replaced by pinch-runner John Polonius. Brian Ragira chopped a single to left field as Polonius raced around to third, setting up runners at the corners. Tyler Horan's sacrifice fly to left field chased Polonius home, snapping the tie and giving the visitors a 7-6 lead.

The Quakes (30-32, 71-61) had a chance for a walk-off win in the bottom of the tenth against reliever Luis Ysla (3-6). With the game tied 6-6, Cody Bellinger singled up the middle and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Travis Witherspoon. Ysla retired the next two batters, however, to extend the contest.

Rancho Cucamonga had a final chance in the bottom of the 11th, but Jake Smith struck out the side to register his 15th save of the season as the Quakes lost their third straight game and sixth in their last seven outings.

San Jose jumped out to the early advantage in the first inning against Quakes' starter Chase De Jong. Big-league rehabber Angel Pagan opened the game with a single to right field. Christian Arroyo doubled off the base of the center field wall, placing runners at second and third. Daniel Carbonell grounded out to third, but Pagan scored for a 1-0 edge.

The Quakes evened the game in the bottom of the second against starter Christian Jones. Tyler Ogle hit a leadoff single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Joey Curletta walked. Spencer Navin singled to center field, plating Ogle for a 1-1 tie.

The Giants roared back in the top of the third against De Jong. Arroyo doubled to left field and came home on Carbonell's single to right. Angel Villalona singled to left field, but Jacob Scavuzzo overran the ball for an error. As Scavuzzo's throw went to second base to try and cut down Villalona, Carbonell raced home to give San Jose a 3-1 cushion.

Rancho Cucamonga drew a run closer in the bottom of the third. Willie Calhoun singled to center field and moved to second on a groundout. A wild pitch by Jones pushed the runner to third. Bellinger delivered a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Calhoun to trim the margin to 3-2.

San Jose responded against De Jong in the top of the fourth. Garcia doubled and advanced to third on a long fly out by Horan. Jeff Kobernus reached on an infield single as Garcia scored to make it 4-2.

The Quakes used the long ball against Jones in the fifth to keep it close. Calhoun smacked a solo homer over the right field fence for his third at the High-A level, cutting the deficit to 4-3.

Rancho Cucamonga rallied for its first lead of the game in the bottom of the seventh against Giants' reliever Dan Slania. Navin doubled to left field. Nate Samson singled to center, but Pagan's accurate throw home cut down Navin as he attempted to score the tying run. Calhoun singled to left, plating Samson. After Scavuzzo walked, Bellinger stroked a double down the left field line, chasing Calhoun and Scavuzzo home for a 6-4 advantage.

The Giants stormed back in the top of the eighth against reliever Joe Broussard. Carbonell opened the inning with a single. Villalona launched a two-run homer to left field, knotting the contest at 6-6 and setting the stage for extra innings.

The Quakes are now winless in six tries against San Jose this season, having lost a four-game series at Municipal Stadium in May before dropping the first two in the current set.

The Giants, meanwhile, have now won seven straight games and have taken over first place in the North Division second-half standings, holding a one-game lead over Visalia.

Rancho Cucamonga will try to salvage the finale of the three-game series at LoanMart Field on Sunday evening. The Quakes have yet to announce a starting pitcher, while San Jose will send right-hander Jordan Johnson (2-1, 2.28 ERA) to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 pm.
