Dayton, Ohio-Shed Long blasted a two-run home run and three Dayton pitchers combined to scatter eight hits as the Dragons defeated the Lake County Captains 3-1 on Sunday evening. The win lifted the Dragons overall record to 68-62. They will need at least two wins in their final eight games to record a winning record for the year.

The Dragons took the lead for good in the third inning when Jon Matthews walked with two outs and Long followed with a home run to right field to make it 2-0. The homer was Long's third of the season.

The Dragons added a run in the fourth inning when Matthews was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run and make it 3-0.

Lake County scored in the sixth when Bobby Bradley lined a double off the right-center field fence to drive in Greg Allen from first base and pull the Captains to within two at 3-1. Lake County left runners in scoring position in each of the last four innings but could not come through with the big hit. They finished 0 for 7 on the day with men in scoring position.

Dragons starting pitcher Tyler Mahle (13-7), the league-leader in earned run average, had an excellent start and was credited with the win. He worked six innings, allowing one run on only four hits with no walks and two strikeouts. Mahle lowered his ERA to 2.39, just 10 points off the club record. He has one more scheduled start this season.

Dragons reliever Brennan Bernardino recorded the final four outs for his third save of the year.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Avain Rachal and Luis Gonzalez each had two.

The Dragons (29-32 in the second half; 68-63 overall) will host the Captains (31-31, 67-63) again on Monday night at 7:00 p.m. Wyatt Strahan (12-7, 2.43) will start for Dayton against Lake County's Jordan Milbrath (6-10, 4.86).
