Late Home Run Stuns Sox In 3-1 Loss

Junior Guerra's dominant start not enough as Sky Sox fall in Nashville.
April 13, 2016

On Wednesday afternoon in Nashville, Colorado Springs Sky Sox starter Junior Guerra (0-1, 2.98) was in fine form. He pitched seven innings of one-hit ball to keep the Sky Sox in the game. After Guerra left the game, the Sounds got a late home run to defeat the Sky Sox 3-1 at First Tennessee Park.

Making his second start of the season, Guerra opposed Nashville right-hander Jesse Hahn (0-0, 0.00). The game was a pitchers duel from the start, with neither starter giving up much to the other team's offense.

The Sounds were able to take the lead in the second on an RBI double by Rangel Ravelo that scored Matt Olson from first. The next batter, Matt McBride, looked to add to the lead with a sinking line drive to right. However, Sky Sox right fielder Shane Peterson was able to dive and make the catch to end the inning and keep the Nashville lead to 1-0.

For the first six innings, the Sky Sox could do little against Hahn. He allowed just four Sky Sox singles in six innings of scoreless work to keep his team ahead.

Guerra was also brilliant, retiring the last 13 Sounds batters he faced to get through seven innings of work on just 82 pitches while striking out seven. At the plate, Garin Cecchini recorded two hits to raise his batting average to .316 on the season.

After Hahn gave way to the Sounds bullpen, the Sky Sox were able to tie up the game. With J.B. Wendelken on the mound, Hernan Perez homered to left to get the Sky Sox even at one. The home run was the first of the season for Perez.

In the eighth, the Sky Sox turned to Austin Ross (0-1, 7.20) to try and keep the game tied at one. But with one out and a runner on first, McBride homered to left to give the Sound a 3-1 lead that they wouldn't give up.

The Sky Sox got the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but Nashville closer Patrick Schuster was able to finish off the game and earn the save. Andrew Triggs (2-0, 0.00) recorded the win for Nashville after pitching a scoreless eighth inning.

In tomorrow night's series finale, Brent Suter (0-1, 6.75) will get the start for the Sky Sox against Dillon Overton (0-1, 2.25). First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 p.m. MDT at First Tennessee Park.
