Springfield Stops Streak

SPRINGFIELD, MO - The Cardinals scored six times in the fifth inning Tuesday afternoon, snapping Corpus Christi's five-game winning streak with a 6-3 triumph in the series finale at Hammons Field.

The Hooks went 5-1 on their trek through Tulsa and Springfield. The club is off Wednesday before opening an eight-game homestand Thursday night.

Corpus Christi starter Keegan Yuhl (0-1) limited the Cardinals to three hits over the first four frames. Springfield shattered the scoreless tie in the fifth, sending nine to the plate. With the bases full and two away, Breyvic Valera launched a double over the head of Derek Fisher in right field, putting the Cards in front 3-0. Two batters later, Luke Volt belted a two-run homer to left field off Joe Musgrove, capping the rally.

The Hooks cut the lead in half in the seventh, capitalizing on three consecutive four-pitch walks to begin the inning. John Brebbia then hit Jack Mayfield with a pitch for Corpus Christi's first run. Conrad Gregor and J.D. Davis followed with a sac fly and single, respectively, making it a 6-3 affair.

Trey Nielsen (1-2) worked around four walks and five hits in five scoreless innings for the win. Ronnie Shaban blanked the Hooks over the final two frames for his third save.

Corpus Christi went 1-for-13 with men in scoring position and stranded 12 on base.

Musgrove finished strong, retiring eight of the final nine Springfield hitters. He combined with Yuhl to fan 10 batters against one walk. Hooks pitchers struck out 30 while issuing four free passes in the three-game series.
