Seesaw battle goes Sky Sox way as Pina provides walk-off single to end epic battle.
April 23, 2016

Call them the cardiac Sky Sox.

The Colorado Springs Sky Sox scored three runs in the bottom of the bottom of the ninth, capped off by Manny Pina's walk-off single, to defeat the Nashville Sounds 8-7 in a wild game on Friday night in front of 3,685 at Security Service Field.

The win is the Sky Sox fourth win this season when trailing after six innings. As of the start of play on Friday night, no other PCL team had more than one win when trailing after six innings.

The game didn't start as well as it ended for the Sky Sox.

For the Sky Sox, it was Brewers top pitching prospect Jorge Lopez (0-0, 7.94), opposed by Oakland's top pitching prospect Sean Manaea (2-0, 1.50).

After both pitchers put up zeroes in the first two innings, it was the Sounds who were able to strike first. With the bases loaded, Max Muncy drove in the game's first run with a single to right. The next batter, Jake Smolinski, doubled off the left field wall to score two more runs before Lopez could get through the frame.

The Sky Sox answered in the bottom of the inning with a two out run. Keon Broxton doubled then stole third, and Orlando Arcia drove him home with a ground ball single to center to get the Sky Sox on the scoreboard.

In the fourth, Joey Wendle drove in another run with a single to get the Sounds lead back to three. Tim Dillard came in from the bullpen to try to keep the Sounds at bay, and he did, stranding two runners on base in the fourth.

Lopez finished the night with three innings pitched, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four.

Dillard was strong out of the bullpen, allowing only one hit in three innings, but the one hit was a Matt Olson home run in the sixth to increase the Sounds lead to 5-1.

After six strong innings, the Sounds went to the bullpen in the seventh. Manaea pitched six innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out four.

In the seventh, the Sky Sox cut into the lead as Josmil Pinto doubled to score Garin Cecchini.

In the eighth, the Sky Sox drew level with a bases loaded double from Manny Pina off the Nashville bullpen that energized the home crowd. Michael Reed, Hernan Perez, and Jake Elmoer hustled home to score on the play and tie the game at five.

With Mitch Lambson on the mound in the ninth, Muncy hit what looked to be the decisive blast with a two run shot to deep right field to give Nashville a 7-5 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Angel Castro was looking to finish off the game, but he ran into trouble.

Josmil Pinto signled, then Arcia and Reed walked to load the bases. Perez tied the game with a bullet down the right field line that hopped over the wall for a ground rule double.

After Ryan Brasier entered the game in relief, Jake Elmore was intentionally walked, then Pina delivered to give the Sky Sox the win.

Mitch Lambson earned his second victory of the series in relief while Castro suffered the loss.

The Sky Sox will hit the road for an eight game road trip beginning tomorrow night in Omaha. Hiram Burgos (1-1, 5.63) is going to be on the mound for the Sky Sox. The Storm Chasers will counter with veteran John Lannan (1-1, 4.02). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 pm MDT at Werner Park.
