Quakes Stumble in Lake Elsinore

Holmes struggles early, offense quiet on Thursday
May 20, 2016

Lake Elsinore, CA- The Quakes saw their three-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday evening, as they dropped a 6-2 decision to the Lake Elsinore Storm at The Diamond.

Rancho's loss prevented a three-game sweep, but the Quakes remain in first place by a full two games over High Desert, after the Mavs were swept at home by Bakersfield.

The Quakes scored the game's first run, when Yusniel Diaz doubled home Tim Locastro for a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived though, as the Storm roared back to take a 3-1 lead after one inning.

Quakes' starter Grant Holmes struggled, as he allowed five hits and committed a throwing error in the first inning. With the game tied at 1-1, Franmil Reyes reached on an infield single, putting the Storm ahead to stay, as Javier Guerra scored to make it 2-1. Jose Ruiz reached on an infield single with two outs, scoring Franchy Cordero to make it a 3-1 contest.

Holmes (3-2) rebounded nicely, getting through five innings without conceding any additional runs. The right-hander struck out eight over his five frames, walking just one batter.

The Rancho offense couldn't find their rhythm against Storm starter T.J. Weir (2-2), who allowed just one run over five innings in the win.

Lake Elsinore scored a run in the sixth off Bubby Rossman to make it 4-1.

The Quakes got that run back in the seventh, as the second error of the night for the Storm allowed Pin-Chieh Chen to score from second base on a dropped fly ball off the bat of Kyle Garlick, making it 4-2.

Rancho would get no closer though, as the Storm put two more on the board in the eighth against Kyle Hooper, taking a commanding 6-2 lead.

Rancho (28-13) finishes their seven-game road trip with a 5-2 mark and enters their series at home against San Jose on Friday night with the best mark in the California League.

On Friday night, 1,500 fans will take home a Corey Seager Bobblehead, thanks to Allstar KIA. Dodgers' rehabbing left-hander Hyun-Jin Ryu (0-0) is expected to start Friday's opener. San Jose will counter with Jordan Johnson (4-1) in the opener. Game time is 7:05pm and tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com.
