Catch Tomorrow's Stars in the Minor Leagues Near You

May 20, 2016

Outside of players that come to the United States from other countries with professional baseball leagues (Korea, Japan, Cuba), all players spend at least some time in the minor leagues. While some players are drafted straight out of high school and others start their professional careers a bit more seasoned after a few years of college ball, all of them have to start out in the minor leagues. What this means is that minor league baseball can not only be a great and inexpensive way to get a live baseball fix, but you can easily get a chance to see the superstars of tomorrow before they become household names. Just looking at 2015, there were a whole handful of players that burst onto the scene after spending some time in the minor leagues - NL Rookie of the Year Kris Bryant, Kyle Schwarber, Noah Syndergaard, AL Rookie of the Year Carlos Correa and Miguel Sano just to name a few.

Here's a look at the top minor league players so far in 2016 that you may have a chance to see close to your home.

Trea Turner, SS - Washington Nationals

Trea Turner is knocking at the door of the major leagues despite being only 22, the age at which most players are finishing up their college careers. Looking at what Turner can do on the field, it's not too surprising that someone so young could be in the majors before bring able to legally rent a car. While not known for his power, Turner can hit for a high average (.337 so far this season) and get on base via the walk (11.2% walk rate in 2016) and will be either an average fielding SS or an above average fielding 2B. If you want to see Trea Turner play with the AAA Syracuse Chiefs, do so before July or so, because Turner could be called up to the big club by the end of this season.

Julio Urias, SP - Los Angeles Dodgers

Talk about young and exciting! Julio Urias is in AAA for the Dodgers at the tender age of 19 and absolutely dominating everyone at every level he's been at. Coming off an injury-shortened 2015 season, Urias is picking up where he left off in 2014, striking out 11.50 batters per nine innings with a three pitch arsenal including a 94 MPH fastball, power curve and a changeup that could end up being an extremely effective weapon. Catch Urias in his next start for the Oklahoma City Dodgers.

Yoan Moncada, 2B - Red Sox

File this name for later, because Yoan Moncada is going to be a superstar. Signed for $63 million by the Red Sox as a 19 year old, Moncada has done nothing but hit and cause absolute havoc on the basepaths in both rookie ball and Class A ball over the last 2 seasons. In just over 100 total games, Moncada has hit 8 home runs and stolen a whopping 65 bases while walking over 12% of the times at the plate. The only thing keeping Moncada in the minors right now is the crowded infield in Boston, with Dustin Pedroia and Xander Bogaerts firmly entrenched up the middle for the big league club. Still, with the way Moncada is hitting so far, he might force the issue in Boston soon.

No matter who your local team is, there's a great chance of seeing one of tomorrow's stars today and even get an autograph and a picture with them. Check your local team's schedule to see who is coming into town all summer long!
