Rainiers Overpower Grizzlies For 10-4 Win

TACOMA, Wash. - The Tacoma Rainiers (38-29) collected a 10-4 victory over the Fresno Grizzlies (30-36) on Friday night at Cheney Stadium.

Tacoma starting pitcher Joe Wieland worked 6.0 innings, surrendering only one run on seven hits - he issued three walks and struck out five.

Designated hitter Stefen Romero (2x4), second baseman Daniel Robertson (2x4), third baseman Tyler Smith (1x3), and center fielder Boog Powell (1x4) powered the Rainiers offense, while combining for five runs and seven RBI.

The Rainiers struck first with a two runs in the bottom of the third inning. Smith reached first base with a walk, followed by a two-out, two-run home run to right field from Powell, giving Tacoma the 2-0 advantage.

The Grizzlies answered with a run in the top of the fourth inning on an RBI single from Jack Mayfield scoring Matt Duffy, cutting Tacoma's lead to one run at 2-1.

Romero and Daniel Robertson both reached base via single to leadoff the home half of the fifth inning, and came around to score on a two-run double to left-center field from Dario Pizzano. Smith then launched a two-run home run over the left field wall, extending the Rainiers lead to 6-1.

Fresno answered with three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Duffy sent a two-run single to right field, followed by a two-out, one-run triple to the left-center field gap from Preston Tucker, cutting Tacoma's lead to two runs at 6-4.

The Rainiers piled on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, sending eight batters to the plate in the process. The first three batters of the frame reached base, setting up a one-run single from Mike Baxter. The bases remained loaded for Romero, who smacked a bases clearing double to center field, pushing the Rainiers lead to 10-4.

Relievers Kraig Sitton and Blake Parker combined to toss 3.0 innings for Tacoma, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out five.

The Rainiers and Grizzlies continue their four-game tomorrow, Saturday, June 18. Right-hander Jarrett Grube (0-0, 5.40) will take the mound for Tacoma, while Fresno is scheduled to start righty Brady Rodgers (5-3, 2.90). First pitch is set for 5:05 p.m. PT.
