Renegades Rout Ironbirds

Hudson Valley Starts Homestand with Easy Win Over Aberdeen
July 24, 2016

FISHKILL, NY - The Renegades scored 10 runs on 13 hits as they pounded the Aberdeen Ironbirds 10-1 in game one of a three-game series Sunday night at Dutchess Stadium. With the win, Hudson Valley moves to within a game of first place in the McNamara Division.

The Renegades jumped on Aberdeen starter Keegan Akin by scoring three runs in the first. Leftfielder Ryan Boldt, centerfielder Garrett Whitley and designated hitter Jake Fraley singled to load the bases with no one out. Third-baseman Jim Haley stepped in and lifted a sac fly to right to score Boldt.   After a walk reloaded the bases with one out, second baseman Jon Popadics grounded a ball to third baseman Kirvin Mosequit. Moesquit threw to second however his throw was in the dirt and trickled into centerfield to score two runs and give Hudson Valley a 3-0 lead. Popadics was given an RBI on the fielder's choice and throwing error.

Aberdeen got a run back in the third. With one out, shortstop Chris Clare singled before a two-out single by catcher Jerry McClanahan moved him to third. Second-baseman Alejandro Juvier then followed that with a single of his own to drive in Clare and pull the Ironbirds to within 3-1. The earned run was the first one given up this season by Hudson Valley starting pitcher Travis Ott, who threw 28.1 innings before allowing his first earned run.

Hudson Valley got the run back in the fourth when Popadics reached first on another throwing error by Moesquit. He then scored when the next hitter, catcher Danny De La Calle, laced a double into left-centerfield and give the Renegades a 4-1 lead.

The home team then put the game away in the fifth as first baseman Nate Lowe (2) blasted a three-run homer over the right-centerfield wall after Whitley and Haley singled in front of him to give the Renegades a 7-1 lead. The homer was Lowe's team-leading second homer of the season.

The Renegades padded their lead by adding three more runs in the sixth. After shortstop Bill Pujols was hit with a pitch, and Boldt singled to start the inning, Whitley drilled a double to left-centerfield to score both men. After two outs, Whitley would score on a single to center by Lowe to give Hudson Valley a commanding 10-1 lead.

Reliever Porter Clayton (1-1) got the win in relief for Hudson Valley after tossing four scoreless innings on two hits. He got the win after Ott reached his pitch count after only four innings, which did not qualify him for the win. For his efforts, Ott did allow a run on four hits in four innings of work. He also struck out seven. Starter Keegan Akin (0-1) took the loss for Aberdeen after allowing three first inning runs. He also gave up four hits and walked on in three innings of work.

The Renegades pounded out 13 hits, which tied them for a season-high. Whitley went 3-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored. Lowe went 2-3 with a homer, single four RBI and a run scored. Boldt and Pujols each chipped in with two hits apiece. Boldt scored two runs, Pujols scored once.

The Ironbirds had seven hits including two hits apiece from Clare, Juvier, and centerfielder Cole Billingsley. Juvier drove in the lone run of the game for Aberdeen.
