McBroom Hits First Double-A Homer in 3-2 L

Taylor Cole produces quality start in losing effort (6 IP, 3 R, 7 K, 0 BB)
July 30, 2016

Richmond, VA - Ryan McBroom blasted a solo homer, his first at the Double-A level, but it wasn't enough as the Fisher Cats lost to the Richmond Flying Squirrels 3-2 Friday night at The Diamond. Taylor Cole turned in his third quality start of the year with seven strikeouts over six innings. The righty was hit with his fourth loss of the year, giving up three runs.

Cole got off to a bit of a bumpy start. Brandon Bednar smacked a one-out home run to left field in the first inning. Then in the second, Tyler Horan led off with a triple and came around to score on a Darren Ford sacrifice fly, quickly putting Richmond on top 2-0.

The Fisher Cats would get one back in the fifth when Christian Lopes doubled off the wall, then scored on a base hit by Roemon Fields. It was the only run allowed by Tyler Beede, who earned his sixth win of the season. The Flying Squirrels got that run back in the bottom of the fifth with back-to-back extra-base hits from John Polonius and Steven Duggar.

McBroom's home run triggered a potential rally in the eighth inning. Derrick Loveless followed with a single, and Emilio Guerrero walked. Richmond then called on Carlos Alvarado out of the bullpen. The hard-throwing righty struck out the next two batters to end the threat. Chase Johnson worked a scoreless ninth inning for his third save.

The four-game series with the Flying Squirrels continues tomorrow evening from The Diamond. Reigning Eastern League Pitcher of the Week Andrew Suarez is set to start for the Flying Squirrels. New Hampshire's starter has not yet been announced. First pitch Saturday night is at 6:05 PM.

The next home game at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium will be on Tuesday, August 2, when the Fisher Cats host the Akron Rubber Ducks at 7:05 p.m. The first 1,000 fans will receive a Bob Stanley Bobblehead, courtesy of Northeast Delta Dental. For information and tickets, visit nhfishercats.com
