Redbirds Cannot Dig Out of Early Hole in 6-3 Loss at Iowa

Ohlman Moves Hitting Streak to Nine Games

DES MOINES, Iowa - The Memphis Redbirds (60-67) had two hits through 7.0 innings and fell behind 6-0 to the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) after the fourth, and a late-inning rally fell short in a 6-3 loss Saturday night in Des Moines.

Iowa starter Jordan Pries stymied the Redbirds through 6.0 shutout innings, and Armando Rivero threw a scoreless seventh to keep Memphis down 6-0 at the seventh-inning stretch. Jeremy Hefner allowed six Iowa runs on nine hits in 5.0 innings, but Corey Littrell and John Brebbia threw 3.0 shutout frames and gave up just two hits to finish the game.

Memphis scored three times and had five hits in the eighth inning to cut the deficit in half, with Mike Ohlman extending his hitting streak to nine games with a RBI double and Harrison Bader scoring Ohlman and Nick Martini with a single to left-center field with two away.

Brebbia allowed a hit and struck out two in the eighth, and Patrick Wisdom singled with two away in the top of the ninth before the Cubs got a strikeout to end the game.

Martini was 2-for-3 with two walks, and Bader ended 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Martini also stole a base and threw a runner out at the plate.

Memphis and Iowa play game two of their series tomorrow afternoon at 1:08 (CT), and the series concludes on Tuesday afternoon. The Redbirds' final regular-season home series (Aug. 24-28) features:
