August 21, 2016

DES MOINES, Iowa - In an all-around showing, the Memphis Redbirds' offense had 10 hits, and four pitchers combined to allow just one run and strike out 11 in a 4-1 win over the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) Sunday afternoon in Des Moines.

Breyvic Valera had his seventh three-hit game of the season and drove in a run, and Efren Navarro had two hits and an RBI. Five other Redbirds had one of Memphis' 10 hits on the day. Carson Kelly was 1-for-4 with an RBI, and he is now on his third separate five-game hitting streak in 26 games with the Redbirds.

After falling behind 2-0 after the first inning last night and 5-0 after the second, Memphis quickly got to work on Sunday and scored a pair in its first at bat. Navarro singled and Jose Martinez doubled with one away, and Navarro scored on a David Washington ground out before Martinez trotted home on a Kelly double.

Mike Mayers needed just eight pitches to get through the bottom of the first, and he ended the day working 5.0 innings and allowing one run on six hits and striking out a season high-tying eight. Mayers issued one walk, and in his last three starts, spanning 17.0 innings, Mayers has walked one and struck out 21.

After the Cubs scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, Memphis added an insurance run in the seventh to make the score 3-1. Patrick Wisdom reached on an error and scored on a Valera single through the hole at second base.

The Redbirds scored their fourth run in the ninth inning spearheaded by relief pitcher Dean Kiekhefer, who legged out an infield single, moved to second on Valera's third hit of the day and scored on a Navarro base hit to left-center field.

After Mayers' day was finished, Ryan Sherriff, Kiekhefer and Miguel Socolovich threw 4.0 scoreless innings and gave up just one hit to secure the win.
