Sisco helps Tides slam Knights in Triple-A debut

Norfolk belts four home runs in slugfest
September 1, 2016

Norfolk belted four home runs - including a grand slam from Chance Sisco in his Triple-A debut - to roll to a 13-9 win over the Charlotte Knights Thursday afternoon.

Sisco, who was promoted to Norfolk from Double-A Bowie earlier Thursday, singled home a run in his third at-bat for his first Triple-A hit before connecting on a grand slam in the eighth inning. The 21-year-old catcher, who is rated as the #2 prospect in the Orioles system by MLB.com, batted .319 with four home runs, 44 RBI and a .405 on-base percentage in 111 games with Bowie this season before his promotion to Norfolk.

Corban Joseph, Christian Walker and Mike Yastrzemski each homered in the win for Norfolk, which kept its faint postseason chances alive with the win. Norfolk is now 3.0 games back of first place Gwinnett, which hosts Durham later Thursday night. Norfolk's elimination number (any combination of Tides losses or Gwinnett wins) is two, with the International League regular season concluding on Monday.

Joseph, Yastrzemski and Trey Mancini each had three hits to help pace Norfolk's 17-hit attack, as the Tides improved to 7-3 at BB&T Ballpark this season. Norfolk has outscored the Knights 62-30 in Charlotte this season, as the Tides have hit 15 home runs through 10 games at BB&T Ballpark.

David Hale (4-7) earned the win after yielding two runs (one earned) on six hits over 5.2 innings of work. He struck out four and walked a pair while throwing 59 of his 90 pitches for strikes.

Former Tide and Baltimore Orioles Miguel Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss on a Major League rehab assignment. Gonzalez allowed seven runs - six earned - in the contest, including five runs in the first inning. He struck out seven over 4.1 innings of work.

The Tides and Knights continue their three-game series on Friday, with first pitch slated for 7:05. Odrisamer Despaigne (1-8, 3.78) gets the start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Carson Fulmer (1-1, 6.30).

Notes: The last Norfolk player to homer in his Triple-A debut was Garabez Rosa, who accomplished the feat on April 12, 2015 at Charlotte…The 10 extra-base hits in the game set a Norfolk season-high…Corban Joseph has now hit safely in nine of his last 10 games, over which he's hit .500 (17-34) with three home runs, nine RBI and 11 runs scored…Dariel Álvarez had an RBI double in the first inning, moving him into the IL lead with 38 doubles this season - just four shy of Norfolk's franchise record of 42 doubles set by Oscar Salazar in 2008…Mike Yastrzemski finished a single shy of hitting for the cycle.
