Shuckers forced into must-win after 10-0 loss to Braves

Biloxi must win final three with Braves to keep playoff hopes alive
September 2, 2016

PEARL, MS. - The Biloxi Shuckers' playoff chances took another hit on Friday night, as the Milwaukee Brewers' Double-A affiliate fell, 10-0, to the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park. The Shuckers must now win the final three games of the season and have the Pensacola Blue Wahoos win two more games against the Birmingham Barons in order to still have a shot at making the 2016 postseason.

Mississippi (38-28, 72-63) greeted Jon Perrin (0-1) with back-to-back extra-base hits to start the first and jump out to an early lead.

MLB rehabber Mallex Smith tripled to right to start the Braves' offense and scored on Ozzie Albies' double. Perrin retired Dustin Peterson on a ground out, but Carlos Franco homered to right to put the Shuckers in a 3-0 deficit at the end of an inning.

The Braves added onto their lead with an RBI single by Peterson in the third, scoring Smith form third for the 4-0 lead.

Mississippi broke the game open with six runs in the fourth to put Biloxi behind by 10, forcing Perrin from the contest after 3.1 innings.

The 23-year-old right-hander finished his Double-A debut with 10 runs allowed (nine earned) on eight hits, three walks and two strikeouts.

Tayler Scott (1.2ip, 4h, 1bb, 1so), Josh Uhen (2ip, 2h, 1bb, 2so) and Junior Rincon (1ip, 2 so) went the rest of the way for manager Mike Guerrero, and held the Braves off the board after the six-run fourth.

For a second consecutive night, Biloxi (31-36, 70-66) struggled against Mississippi's starting pitching, as Sean Newcomb (8-7) took a perfect game into the fifth. Javier Betancourt (1x3) broke up the bid in the sixth with a leadoff single, but would be erased on a fielder's choice by Angel Ortega (0x3).

Newcomb finished the night with seven shutout innings on one hit, a walk and eight strikeouts on 102 pitches (69 strikes). Braves' starters have allowed one run on three hits, three walks and 12 strikeouts in 15.1 innings through the first two games of the series.

The Shuckers were held to just one hit on Friday for the first time in club history.

The Shuckers will attempt to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win in game three of the five-game set on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. RHP Taylor Jungmann (3-3, 2.33) goes for Biloxi against LHP Michael Mader (0-32.52) of the Braves. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., with coverage starting at 5:40 p.m. on the Biloxi Shuckers' Radio Network's flagship station WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM, Pascagoula's WPMO 1580 AM and the TuneIn Radio app.
