Threshers Lead FSL in End-Season All-Stars

Legg Named a Coach of the Year, Four Recognized as League's Best
September 3, 2016

The Florida State League end of season All-Stars were announced on Thursday, with a league-most four members of the Clearwater Threshers honored along with manager Greg Legg.

Scott Kingery (2B), Mitch Walding (3B), Carlos Tocci (CF), and Kyle Martin (DH) were all voted in by the league's managers, official scorers, and broadcasters.

Legg received recognition for the second-straight year, after he was named Manger of the Year in 2015 upon leading the Threshers to first and second half titles and their first playoff appearance in eight years. Legg has been named an FSL coach of the year this season, heading up a Threshers squad which has posted the best overall record in the league for the second-straight year.

Kingery impressed in his first full professional season, as the 22-year-old hit .293 with 29 doubles and 26 stolen bases in 94 games with Clearwater. A second round draft pick out of the University of Arizona in 2015, Kingery was a midseason All-Star before batting .361 in 30 second-half games, earning a promotion to Double-A Reading on July 25.

Walding launched six home runs in the opening month on his way to a breakout season, batting .280 with a career-high ten homers and 53 RBIs in 100 games for Clearwater. The 23-year-old third baseman started for the North in the FSL All-Star game and won the league's Home Run Derby before putting up a .311 average in the second half, earning a bump up to Reading on August 4.

Kingery and Walding will also represent the Phillies in this year's Arizona Fall League.

The 21-year-old Tocci has steadily improved since joining Clearwater in June of last season. His 31 extra-base hits are a career-high, while the smooth center fielder has hit .283 in 126 games. Tocci was also a midseason All-Star after batting .271 in the first half, and is ranked by MLB.com as the Phillies No. 23 prospect.

Martin was voted in as the league's DH, as Dunedin's Ryan McBroom took the honors at first base. Martin's 80 RBIs trail only McBroom's 83 for the most in the Florida State League. The 23-year-old has crushed 19 home runs this season, which is tied for the most by a Thresher in the team's 12-year history and tied for the fourth-most all-time by any Clearwater batter. His .998 fielding percentage leads all FSL first basemen, and would tie the FSL all-time record.

Daytona's Aristides Aquino was voted the FSL's Player of the Year, while Jupiter's Luis Castillo earned Pitcher of the Year.
