Sea Dogs 2016 Season Recap

The Sea Dogs completed the 2016 season with a 55-84 record and finished in sixth place in the Eastern League's Eastern Division (improving from 53-89 in 2015).

The Sea Dogs welcomed 374,746 fans through the gates at Hadlock Field, including their nine-millionth fan in franchise history on August 25th. 2016 marked the third-straight season that total attendance at Hadlock Field has increased (up from 368,291 in 2015).

Portland had the third-highest total attendance in the Eastern League and an average of 5,354 that was also third-best.

Records & Firsts

  • The Sea Dogs set a new single-season franchise record with 47 triples, breaking the previous record of 45 set in 1995.
  • The Sea Dogs also set new single-month team highs for triples (16) and slugging percentage (.455) in July.
  • Aneury Tavarez set a franchise record for triples in a season (13) as well as triples in a single month (5 in July, 5 in August). Tavarez is now tied as the Sea Dogs' career leader in triples with 14 (Fletcher Bates, 1998-99).
  • Tavarez also posted the highest batting average (.335) as a Red Sox affiliate.
  • Keith Couch set a single-month record for lowest ERA in July (0.75).
  • Couch also now owns the franchise record for career complete games with 7.
  • Teddy Stankiewicz threw the first ever complete game nine-inning one-hitter in franchise history on August 2nd vs. Erie at Hadlock Field. Stankiewicz allowed a single in the sixth inning and retired 27 of 28 batters faced.
  • The Sea Dogs set single-game team records for triples (4 on May 23rd at Harrisburg) and total bases (45 on August 10th at Erie). They also tied a franchise record for most innings played (17 on April 15th vs. Hartford).
  • Tavarez and Mauricio Dubon became the 15th and 16th players in franchise history to register a five-hit game.
  • Andrew Benintendi had his contract selected by the Boston Red Sox on August 2nd and went directly from Portland to the major leagues, becoming the first Sea Dogs position player to make the leap to the majors in-season since Josh Reddick in 2009. One month later, the Red Sox selected the contract of Yoan Moncada, who made the jump from Portland to the big leagues on September 2nd.

Leaders

  • Mitch Atkins led the Eastern League with 145 strikeouts, becoming the first Sea Dog to lead the league since Henry Owens in 2014. Atkins finished with the most strikeouts for a Sea Dogs pitcher since Jon Lester in 2005 (163).
  • Tavarez finished second in the league in batting average to Binghamton's Phillip Evans by .00012 points while also finishing second in the league in triples, third in on-base percentage (.379), and fourth in slugging percentage (.506).

Streaks

  • Aaron Wilkerson worked 21.0 consecutive scoreless innings from May 5-23. The scoreless streak was the longest for the Sea Dogs in 2016 and tied for sixth longest in franchise history.
  • Tavarez ended the season on the longest hitting streak of the year for a Sea Dogs player at 12 games.
  • Moncada posted the longest on-base streak of the season for a Sea Dogs player at 18 games.
