Zobrist Crowned World Series MVP

November 3, 2016

Former Hook Ben Zobrist was the catalyst in a 10th-inning rally Wednesday night which catapulted his Chicago Cubs to an 8-7 win over Cleveland in Game 7 of the 2016 World Series.

The four-hour and 28-minute epic capped the Cubs' first title since 1908.

The Indians trailed 6-3 with two outs and the bases clear in the eighth. An infield hit was the start of an improbable game-tying sequence, culminating with Rajai Davis' two-run home run off Chicago closer Aroldis Chapman.

Following a 17-minute rain delay, Kyle Schwarber opened the Chicago 10th with a single to right field. Pinch-runner Albert Amora advanced to second on a deep fly ball off the bat of Kris Bryant. The Indians elected to walk Anthony Rizzo, bringing Zobrist to the plate.

Bryan Shaw jumped ahead 1-2 before Zobrist scorched a double down the left-field line, pushing the Cubs to a 7-6 lead. Chicago added another run when Miguel Montero singled, the exclamation point on a drama-filled series comeback for the Cubs, who at one point trailed three games to one.

During the series, Zobrist cracked two doubles, worked four walks and scored five times, going 10-for-28 (.357) at the plate. The super-utility man, who won it all with Kansas City last year, is the fourth player in MLB history to win back-to-back World Series championships in different leagues.

Zobrist, Hunter Pence (San Francisco Giants, 2012 & 2014) and Juan Carlos Gutierrez (Giants, 2014) are Corpus Christi alums who have won World Series rings. They were teammates on the 2006 Texas League Championship club.
