December 15, 2016

CORPUS CHRISTI - Chicago Cubs left-handed pitcher Rob Zastryzny is the 2016 Mike Adams South Texas Professional Player of the Year. The Calallen product will be honored at the 13th South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet, set for Thursday, January 26, at the Omni Hotel.

Zastryzny, 24, made eight appearances for Chicago last season, logging a 1.13 ERA and a .207 opponents' batting average. He struck out 17 and walked five in 16 innings.

The Cubs, who owned the best record (103-58) in Major League Baseball, went on to win their first World Series title since 1908.

Zastryzny split his time between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa to begin the year. In 24 minor-league assignments (23 starts), he went 10-5 with a 4.31 ERA, and averaged 2.33 strikeouts per walk.

With the I-Cubs, Zastryzny was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week after picking up two victories over a pair of shutout performances August 1 and August 7. During this span, he struck out 13 against one walk and two hits over 11 innings.

Selected by Chicago in the second round of the 2013 draft out of the University of Missouri, Zastryzny made his Major League debut August 19 at Colorado's Coors Field. The former Calallen Wildcat did not allow a run in his first three big-league assignments, covering 7 1/3 frames. His lone decision was a victory August 29 vs. Pittsburgh.

Zastryzny, who held left-handers to a .138 batting average, earned his first start September 29 at PNC Park. The Pirates managed an unearned run on two hits in his 3 2/3 innings of work. Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Zastryzny became the ninth Canadian-born pitcher to start for the Cubs. It marked his final appearance of the year.

Tickets for the South Texas Winter Baseball Banquet are on sale now at the Whataburger Field Box Office, or by calling 361-561-HOOK (4665). Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the event, presented by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and iHeartMedia, begins at 7.
