Springfield, MO-The Arkansas Travelers came back from eight runs down to tie but eventually fell to the Springfield Cardinals, 11-10 on Sunday.
Springfield built leads of 7-0 and 9-1 in the middle innings only to have the Travs come roaring back to tie at 10-10. All the runs in the game were scored from the bottom of fourth through the bottom of the seventh.
The Cardinals put up seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to knock out Arkansas starter Max Povse. The rally started after there were two out and none one but saw nine straight Cards reach base including six on hits. After the Travs scored in the fifth, Springfield answered with consecutive homers by Bruce Caldwell and Jacob Wilson for a 9-1 lead.
Arkansas bounced right back though with a seven run inning of their own in the top of the sixth. The Travs 7-spot featured four hits including two by Chantz Mack (single, double) and a double from Chuck Taylor as well as two walks, two hit by pitches and a Cardinal error on the potential third out. Mack's single capped the scoring in the frame and pulled the Travs within 9-8.
After Springfield pushed their lead to two again in the bottom of the sixth, the Travs pulled even in the seventh. Nelson Ward opened the inning with a single and would steal second base. Three hitters later, Kyle Waldrop launched a two-run homer to dead centerfield completing the comeback from eight down and tying the game at 10.
The Cards though would answer with the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the inning. With two out Oscar Mercado and Nick Martini singled off reliever Darin Gillies. Then with Thyago Vieira on the mound, Adolis Garcia singled up the middle to put the Cards back in front. The Travs would threaten in both the eighth and ninth innings getting two runners each time but could not break through.
Tyler Bray (1-0) pitched scoreless baseball for the final 2.1 innings to get the win while Darin Gillies (0-2) was charged with the loss for the Travs. Taylor, Waldrop and Mack each had three hits to pace the Travs attack. Taylor fell a homerun short of the cycle and knocked in a pair, Waldrop drove in three while Mack's day included a pair of doubles.
The Travs wrap up the series in Springfield and their roadtrip with a day game on Monday. First pitch is set for 11:10 a.m. Right-hander Dylan Unsworth (1-1, 3.86) makes his third start for the Travs against righty Sandy Alcantara (2-1, 5.91) for the Cardinals. The game will be broadcast on the Sports Animal 920, the First Pitch App, TuneIn radio and milb.tv.
