INDIANAPOLIS -Austin Meadows collected four RBI and Jason Rogers and Erich Weiss notched three-hit performances as the Indianapolis Indians dumped the Toledo Mud Hens, 9-2, on Tuesday night at Victory Field. The Indians tallied 17 hits as a club - a new season high - en route to a season-high run total.
Facing right-hander A.J. Ladwig (0-1) in his Triple-A debut, the Indians (8-15) wasted little time in securing the lead. In the second inning, Jacob Stallings plated Weiss and Eric Wood with a two-out single to center. The Tribe then doubled their lead in the third on a run-scoring fielder's choice by Meadows and RBI single from Weiss.
Backed with a 4-0 cushion, Indianapolis starter Clay Holmes was unable to get through five frames, falling one out shy of qualifying for his first Triple-A win. With the lead cut in half in the fifth, Brett McKinney (1-1) took over for Holmes and stranded a pair of runners on the bases. He then tossed a scoreless top of the sixth, preceding a five-run outburst by the Indy offense.
The Tribe sent nine batters to the plate against Toledo (12-11) in the frame, with Joey Terdoslavich, Stallings, Christopher Bostick, Meadows and Rogers each collecting knocks. Meadows' two-bagger busted the game wide open, turning a 5-2 game into an 8-2 romp. Rogers followed suit, doubling home Meadows to complete the scoring.
Indy's A.J. Schugel and Edgar Santana combined for three scoreless innings down the stretch.
Bostick finished 2-for-5 atop the order, giving him five straight multi-hit games while raising his average to a team-best .341. Meadows became the first Tribe player in 2017 to tally four RBI in a single game.
Ladwig, called up from Single-A Advanced Lakeland prior to the game, was tagged for six earned runs on 12 hits over five frames while taking the defeat.
The Indians and Mud Hens continue their three-game set Wednesday afternoon at Victory Field. Right-hander Tyler Eppler (2-1, 2.45) will start for Indy, opposite Mud Hens right-hander Drew VerHagen (2-0, 2.25). First pitch is set for 1:35 p.m.
