'Dogs and 'Cats split twinbill on Saturday Night

Barfield and Villanueva shine in the opener

Manchester, NH - The Portland Sea Dogs (43-46) and New Hampshire Fisher Cats (36-56) split a doubleheader on Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. Portland won the opener 2-1, but lost the nightcap 3-2.

Game 1 Recap
Jeremy Barfield (2-for-3) delivered a two-run single in the fourth and Elih Villanueva (3-3) worked six scoreless, as the 'Dogs took the opener 2-1. Villanueva earned the win, allowing just two hits and fanning four.
 
Williams Jerez allowed a run in the seventh but fanned Matt Dean to end the game, and secure his fourth save of the season.
 
New Hampshire's Francisco Rios (3-9) suffered the loss, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and five strikeouts.
 
Portland's rally in the fourth started on a double by Danny Mars. Josh Tobias reached on a sacrifice-E5 and Michael Chavis moved up Tobias on a ground out. Barfield singled through the left side, picking up his team-leading, ninth game-winning RBI.
 
Game 2 Recap
Portland took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning but New Hampshire scored three unanswered runs, taking the nightcap, 3-2.
 
RHP John Straka (1-0) won his first appearance of the season with New Hampshire. The righty allowed two runs on seven hits over 5 innings pitched. RHP Taylor Grover (2-5) took the loss for Portland, allowing three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings.
 
Portland received a lead-off double by Cole Sturgeon (2-for-4) in the seventh, but he was caught stealing for the second out. Andrew Case fanned Jeremy Barfield to end the game and secure his fifth save of the year.
 
The 'Dogs received RBIs from Michael Chavis (ground out) and Henry Urrutia (single) in the first inning.
 
New Hampshire responded, receiving a two-out RBI double from Harold Ramirez. The Fisher Cats tied the game in the second on a lead-off homer by Gunnar Heidt. Matt Dean, who fanned to end game one, doubled in the go-ahead run in the fourth for the game-winning RBI
 
Ty Buttrey worked 2.2 scoreless in his return to Portland from Triple-A Pawtucket.
 
Portland and New Hampshire wrap-up their five-game series on Sunday afternoon beginning at 1:35 PM. LHP Henry Owens (1-1, 4.76) makes his third start of the year for Portland. RHP Sean Reid-Foley (5-7, 4.76) makes his 18th start for New Hampshire.
