HAGERSTOWN, MD - Addison Russ and Will Hibbs combined to throw four scoreless innings as the BlueClaws held off Hagerstown 3-2 and take the series opener Tuesday night at Municipal Stadium.
Russ came on in the sixth and threw three perfect innings of relief while Hibbs, who earned his league-leading 16th save, stranded runners at first and third in the ninth inning.
The BlueClaws (26-32/66-62) improve to 10-13 against the Suns (29-27/67-58) this season with two games left in the season series.
Hibbs, meanwhile, got the first two outs in the ninth before Telmito Augustin and Nick Banks reached. Hibbs, however, was able to get Anderson Franco to fly out with runners on the corners to end the game and earn his 16th save of the year.
The Suns took the lead with two runs off Bailey Falter in the second inning. Falter had wiggled his way out of a jam in the first, but Blake Perkins' two-run double in the second inning put Hagerstown up 2-0.
Lakewood came back and took the lead in the third inning. Daniel Brito homered to bring Lakewood within 2-1. It was Brito's sixth home run of the season and first since June 29th.
After a double by Gregori Rivero, the game was delayed by rain for 62 minutes. Following the delay, Suns starter Matthew DeRosier made a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt from Luke Williams, allowing Rivero to score the tying run. The BlueClaws then took the lead when Williams scored on an infield grounder from Arquimedes Gamboa.
Falter, who improved to 8-6 with the win, came out after five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Suns starter Matthew DeRosier (2-4) came out after five innings as well, allowing three runs, one earned.
Gamboa, Brito, and Rivero each had two hits for Lakewood. Gamboa has eight hits in his last three games and Brito extended his hitting streak to nine games, a season high.
The BlueClaws and Suns continue their series on Wednesday night at Municipal Stadium. RHP Luis Carrasco (0-2) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Carlos Pena (6-5).
