A six-run top of the seventh inning was the difference on Sunday afternoon as the Biloxi Shuckers (45-35, 4-7 2nd Half) dropped their series opener to the Mobile BayBears (32-47, 5-6) 8-2 at MGM Park. Jake Gatewood and Bruce Caldwell each recorded multi-effort hits in the defeat.
Biloxi jumped out to a lead in the first inning thanks to a solo home run by Caldwell, his fourth of the season. The Shuckers added on a run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single by Gatewood, his second hit of the day, to put Biloxi up 2-0.
In his first start since June 5, RHP Drew Rasmussen hurled 2.2 scoreless frames and allowed just two hits while not walking a batter and striking out four. LHP Cameron Roegner (L, 1-3) entered for the Shuckers in fourth and worked a 1-2-3 frame. The tall lefty allowed a run in the fifth on a single by Julian Leon and worked around a bases-loaded jam in the sixth but surrendered the tying hit on an RBI single from Connor Justus.
Square at 2-2 in the seventh, the BayBears used two walks and a single to load the bases before Jhoan Urena drove in the go-ahead runs with a single to left, putting Mobile up 4-2. After a walk to Justus loaded the bases again, RHP Marcos Diplan entered the game for Roegner and allowed a grand slam to Zane Gurwitz, his first Double-A home run of the season, to give the BayBears a resounding 8-2 advantage.
RHP Adam Hofacket (W, 2-2) limited the Shuckers to just two hits in his three innings out of the bullpen and RHP Adrian Almeida worked around a single in the ninth to finish the game for Mobile. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the BayBears.
In game two of a four game series, the Shuckers will send RHP Alec Bettinger (4-5, 3.94) to the mound against BayBears RHP Tyler Carpenter (0-0, 2.45) on Monday night for a 6:35 pm first pitch at MGM Park.
