The Tennessee Smokies scored first on Sunday and never looked back to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits, 4-1.
Christian Franklin scored on a balk, then Moises Ballesteros singled to score Matt Shaw and give the Smokies a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Josh Rivera singled in the fifth to score Cole Roederer and Antonio Jimenez scored in the same frame.
On the mound, the Cubs’ top pitching prospect Cade Horton worked 3.1 innings while giving up three hits and one run. Blake Weiman relieved Horton, earning the win after working 1.2 innings and striking out three. Cayne Ueckert, Zac Leigh and Frankie Scalzo Jr. kept the Biscuits at bay and closed out the victory.
Up next: The Smokies travel to face Rocket City to face the Trash Pandas in a six-game set.
