IOWA FALLS IN SERIES FINALE VS. COLUMBUS

DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Cubs (19-20) hit three home runs but fell in the series finale by a 9-6 score to the Columbus Clippers (16-22) today at Principal Park.

Columbus jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double from George Valera. Juan Brito gave the Clippers a 5-0 lead in the fifth with a three-run homer.

Iowa fought back in the bottom half of the fifth as Brennen Davis hit a solo home run. Matt Mervis followed that up with a solo homer of his own in the sixth, making it 5-2, Columbus.

The I-Cubs tallied a four-run seventh inning as BJ Murray Jr. drove in two with a double and Jake Slaughter hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5. Mervis drove in a run with two outs to give Iowa a 6-5 lead.

Columbus’ Johnathan Rodriguez tied the game at 6-6 in the eighth with a single. Later in the inning, Jose Tenahit a three-run blast giving the Clippers a 9-6 advantage.

POSTGAME NOTES:

  • The I-Cubs and Clippers split their six-game series; marks the first series split of the season.
  • Matt Mervis has hit three homers in his last two games. He is the second I-Cub to homer in back-to-back games this season, following Jake Slaughter from April 21-24.
