Lowell, MA - Late heroics from an unlikely source was the key ingredient in the elixir used to avoid the sweep on Monday night in northern Massachusetts. The Auburn Doubledays (14-16) took Game Three of the series with the first-place Lowell Spinners (20-9), 4-3.
The early scoring came from just one man, and the Spinners jumped out to an early lead on the Doubledays. RF Nick Decker belted his third and fourth home runs on the season on Monday night, and they were both solo shots. Both of his home runs, in the third and the fifth inning, went to right center field, both came on two-strike counts, and Lowell led 2-0 after five full.
The Spinners would add one more run in the sixth, but it was no longer the Decker show. Vanderbilt product Stephen Scott plated C Jaxx Groshans with a single to right field and gave the Spinners a commanding 3-0 lead.
The seventh changed everything for Auburn. It started with a two-out bloop double from 2B Jose Sanchez, before 3B Jack Dunn plated him with a single that ripped through the middle to center to score Sanchez. After Dunn, RF Landerson Pena reached on a ground ball to short that Lowell SS Cameron Cannon commit an error on.
Dunn on second. Pena at first. Enter Eric Senior.
Senior took a first pitch fastball to left field, and it sailed over the wall for his second home run of the season. A three-run blast from the Toronto, ONT native gave Auburn a 4-3 lead heading into the stretch.
The Doubledays wouldn't relinquish that lead. LHP Jordan Bocko and RHP Hunter McMahon finished the job on the mound, combining for three innings of shutout baseball and registering a hold and a save, respectively.
Doubleday starter Jackson Rutledge, Washington's first round selection in this year's MLB Draft, went three innings of one-hit baseball. The only hit against him was a Decker bomb, and he struck out two while walking one.
RHP Todd Peterson got the win, throwing three innings and allowing two earned runs.
Auburn has an off day on Tuesday before hitting the road again, this time a much shorter trip. The Doubledays go to Batavia for a matchup with the Pinckney-topping Muckdogs. First pitch on Wednesday is at 7:05 p.m., and you can listen to Jack McMullen on the radio call on FingerLakes1.com or the TuneIn app.
