The Doubledays (2-5) kicked off their first trip outside of Central New York on a winning note, running away with an 8-1 victory over the Scrappers (5-3) at Mahoning Valley.
After bringing in the first run of the game in the 2nd on a groundout, Adalberto Carrillo kicked off a three-run 5th inning by smacking a leadoff double. He made his way to third base after a fielder's choice by Scrappers shortstop Brayan Rocchio failed to be corralled cleanly and scored one pitch later on an RBI single by Jose Sanchez. With runners at the corners and a new pitcher - Jordan Scheftz - on the mound, a wild pitch tacked on yet another run to Auburn's lead. Catcher Wilmer Perez drove in another run on a line drive single before Scheftz finally retired the side.
Auburn starter Niomar Gomez provided a much needed shutdown inning and then some. After allowing just a single run over five innings his first time on the mound this season, Gomez upped the ante by tossing five-innings of shutout ball while punching out a career-high nine batters. Through two starts this year, the six-foot-three righty from Guiria, Venezuela owns a shiny 0.90 ERA.
The Doubledays continued to pile on runs for their starter with another three-run spot the very next inning. Jack Dunn put himself into scoring position after Scheftz's third wild pitch on the night. Two subsequent walks loaded the bases, and a soft single brought in two runs. Scrappers pitchers continued their wildness even after Scheftz was pulled as Juan Paredes launched a pitch past the catcher to bring in Rafael Bautista from third base.
Mahoning Valley was able to break up the shutout in the 6th with a run off of new pitcher Adrian Martinez, but the Doubledays fired back with their own the 8th to secure the 8-1 win and take the first game of their three-game series with the Scrappers.
