Doubledays starting pitchers have had no issues retiring their opponents early on over their last three contests, holding batters to just a .129 batting average with no runs allowed over the first three innings. But from the 4th inning onwards it gets a little bit more dicey.
A spectacular outing by Jackson Stoeckinger was spoiled by the Crosscutters (3-2) on Tuesday night after yet another solid Doubledays (2-3) start was wasted on late-inning action by the opposition, with Williamsport erupting for three runs in the sixth en route to a 4-0 win to take the series.
Stoeckinger went five solid innings, allowing just one run on five sporadic hits in his first start since being sent from Hagerstown. He struggled for the Suns after skipping Short-Season entirely to start the season but looked in control and comfortable in his first start as a Doubleday.
He recorded single strikeouts in the second and third innings before recording a pair of punch-outs in the fourth - both swinging. The only blemish on his final line came from an RBI single from Edwin Rodriguez to score Jonathan Guzman from third.
Although Stoeckinger was excellent for the Doubledays, his opposition on the mound, righty Gustavo Armas, was dominant for the Crosscutters. Armas went seven full innings for Williamsport, allowing just four total hits and striking out seven for his first win of the 2018 season.
While Armas' margin for error was razor thin throughout the first five frames of the game, he finally received from breathing room in the sixth when the Crosscutters erupted for three runs off of the Doubledays bullpen. Trey Turner was knocked around for two runs, though only one was earned, before Jhonatan German was called upon to restore order.
German quickly allowed a double and an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game but struck out Lenin Rodriguez to end the inning and pitched the rest of the game without any road bumps.
Randy Alcantara took over in relief of Armas following the seventh inning and picked up right where Armas left off, allowing just one hit to secure Williamsport's third win of the season.
The Doubledays will be back in action tomorrow for the series finale against the Crosscutters with first pitch at 7:05 PM.
