The Doubledays struggled to make contact the entire night against the Black Bears on Monday. After scoring four runs on Sunday, their offense was completely shut down and was only able to record four hits over 12 innings this time out against West Virginia.
Though the Black Bears didn't fare much better in the batter's box, their resiliency paid off with two outs in the 12th inning. The Doubledays dropped Game 2 in walk-off fashion, losing the game 2-1, as well as the series.
Kyle Marinconz served as the only offensive spark for the Doubledays in a game that was highlighted almost entirely by pitching. He had two of Auburn's four hits - serving up a single in the second inning and another all the way in the 11th to score the game's first run.
His go-ahead single in extras was, astoundedly, the Doubledays' first hit since his knock in the second inning. West Virginia starting pitcher Osvaldo Bido set the next 11 Auburn batters down in order before plunking Jacob Rhinesmith to lead off the 4th, but quickly erased him from the basepaths after getting Pablo O'Connor to bounce into a double play.
While he wasn't able to two-hit the Black Bears like Bido did to the Doubledays, Auburn starter Francys Peguero was just as potent on the mound. "El Pegui" threw his usual five frames of solid ball - as he had his previous five times to the mound - and tied his season high in strikeouts by fanning six batters.
Aaron Barrett and Nector Ramirez held down the mound for an inning apiece before Angel Guillen settled down in long relief. He went four strong innings and allowed just one hit as he pitched into the 11th inning. He appeared to be on his way to getting the win following Marinconz's base knock in the top of the inning, but the Black Bears were able to even the game up the game on a sacrifice fly.
The Doubledays put themselves in another position to score in extras when they loaded the bases in the top of the 12th. A single and a walk put Auburn's placed runner at second 90 feet away from taking the lead, but he was unable to score following an infield pop out and a strikeout.
Tanner Driskill - replacing Guillen on the mound - intentionally walked his first batter of the 12th but allowed a single the next at-bat to load the bases. Though he did manage to record the next two outs, Edison Lantigua was able to work a walk and win in walk-off fashion for the Black Bears.
The Doubledays will be back in action Tuesday against West Virginia at 7:05 PM.
