AUBURN, NY - The Doubledays' bats finally emerged in the series finale against the Muckdogs after getting silenced by Batavia pitchers on Thursday and Friday. Auburn's bats rose above the Muckdogs', 9-3, on a warm and steamy night at Falcon Park.
Auburn and Batavia were originally scheduled to play a double header, but torrential thunderstorms earlier in the day created an unsafe playing field for the first game scheduled at 4 PM. The moisture was still visible even in the late innings, as the dew on the field slowly began to turn into fog which lingered in the outfield.
The Doubledays' offense came alive and put up a three-spot in the third inning after scoring three runs combined over their last two contests. A leadoff walk and a throwing error gave Auburn two runners in scoring position, allowing the rehabbing David Masters to double and plate two. Another rehabber, Drew Ward, brought him home on an RBI single to center.
Auburn brought in two more in the fourth inning when a Jake Randa double once again put runners on second and third. A fielding error allowed Alberto Carrillo to reach base as well as score Jose Sanchez, and a sacrifice fly by Eric Senior rounded out the inning.
Doubledays starter Nelson Galindez was a bit shaky out the gates, allowing a one-out triple to the second batter he faced - Dalvy Rosario - and a single to give Batavia an early 1-0 lead. Galindez did settle down for the next two innings before getting pulled with one out in the fourth for Alfonso Hernandez.
Hernandez shined in his 3.1 inning outing, allowing just four hits and one run en route to his second win of the season. His lone run came in the seventh inning when Albert Guaimaro singled in Milton Smith II with two outs.
Auburn rebounded by scoring four times over the next two innings. Two runs came in the seventh on back-to-back RBI base knocks by Jake Alu and Caldioli Sanfler, and two more came in the eighth on consecutive Jack Dunn and Alu singles.
The Doubledays will be back in action Sunday night in West Virginia as they take on the Black Bears at 7:05. Listen in on the action on fingerlakes1.com, milb.streamguys1.com, or the TuneIn app.
