Another impressive performance by the pitching staff led the Tri-City Dust Devils (20-14, 40-32) to the 5-2 win over the Hillsboro Hops on Tuesday night at Ron Tonkin Field. Relievers Evan Miller and Elliot Ashbeck combined to keep the Hops scoreless over the final four innings of the game.
For the second straight night Chris Mattison led the way at the plate for the Dust Devils. Mattison had three hits and scored two of the team's five runs. Tri-City was able to take a five-run advantage after scoring four runs in the top of the third inning. Despite not scoring a run the rest of the night, the early edge proved to be enough for Tri-City. Starting pitcher Will Stillman earned the win after allowing two runs in five innings of work. Ashbeck collected his first save with the Dust Devils after keeping Hillsboro off of the scoreboard during the eighth and ninth innings. With Spokane's win over Salem-Keizer Tuesday night, Tri-City remains tied with the Indians for first place in the North Division with four games left in the regular season.
Left-hander Tom Cosgrove will start the final game of the five-game series for the Dust Devils on Wednesday night. The Hops will counter with right-hander Brian Shaffer. Tri-City will return home on September 1st to begin a three-game series against the Vancouver Canadians, which will be the final series of the regular season. September 1st will be a $1 Family Feast Night presented by CO-Energy and WSU Cougar Night at Gesa Stadium. Great seats are available by calling the Dust Devils' front office at (509) 544-8789 or by going to www.dustdevilsbaseball.com to purchase tickets.
