JOHNSON CITY, TN - While the Elizabethton Twins scored in the third inning and controlled most of the game, the Johnson City Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the eighth, holding on in the ninth to win 3-2.
Brent Headrick made his pro debut Wednesday at TVA Credit Union Ballpark, throwing a scoreless first inning and stranding a pair of runners on.
Ryan Shreve pitched the next 4.2 innings, allowing just one run on five hits with three strikeouts. Frandy Torres took over with a runner on base in the sixth inning, stranding him on and pitching a scoreless seventh to hold the Twins' lead at one run, at the time 2-1.
Both Elizabethton runs were scored in the third, as Kidany Salva led off the frame with his third home run of the season, then Seth Gray scored Ruben Santana on a sacrifice fly.
That was the extend of the scoring Wednesday, for a team that outhit their opponent 7-6, while stranding nine runners on.
Anthony Prato had another good game at the plate, going 3-5 with hits in his first three at-bats, including a double in the third inning.
Making his second appearance of the season, Yancarlos Baez brought the Cardinals to two outs in the eighth inning but surrendered a go-ahead home run to Zach Jackson that ended up being the difference.
Santana singled in the ninth but was forced out on a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Now 28-32, the Twins fall to 3.5 games out of first place in the Appalachian League West Division. The team needs to go 6-1 over its final seven games to finish with a record above .500 and will finish off its season series with the Cardinals Thursday night in Johnson City.
