Greeneville, Tennessee - The Elizabethton Twins struck first Friday night on a two run home run from Charles Mack in the fifth, but couldn't score after that. Two runs in the eighth from the Greeneville Reds broke a tie and the G-Reds held on to win 4-2, also winning the series.
Elizabethton outhit Greeneville 6-5, with Mack and Max Smith each collecting two hits. Matt Wallner doubled for the Twins' second hit of the game in the fifth, scoring on Mack's home run, his fifth home run of 2019.
Through the first seven innings, Twins pitching was stellar. Sawyer Gipson-Long, making his second start of the year, tossed three shutout innings with just one hit allowed and six strikeouts.
Cody Laweryson entered the game after him, allowing two runs on two hits while striking out four. The only damage done to him came in the sixth inning when A.J. Bumpass connected for a two-run homer to tie the game.
Erik Cha took over after Laweryson and allowed two runs to score on two hits and a walk. Elizabethton brought the tying run to the plate with no outs in the ninth, but could not score to drop not only the game 4-2, but the series 1-2.
The Twins continue their road trip Saturday in Bluefield at 6:30 p.m., the first of three with the Blue Jays.
