BRISTOL, Va. - The Johnson City Cardinals' scheduled game Friday evening against the Bristol Pirates at Boyce Cox Field has been canceled due to unplayable field conditions. Since the two teams are not scheduled to play again during the 2017 regular season, the matchup will not be rescheduled.
Tonight's contest marks the first canceled game for the Cardinals this season. It is the first time Johnson City has had a game outright canceled since game two of a doubleheader against Bristol at TVA Credit Union Ballpark on August 12, 2015.
The Cardinals had a 3-0 lead at the time the game was postponed. All three runs for the Redbirds were scored in the top of the third inning on RBI singles by CF Chase Pinder and C Alexis Wilson . Johnson City's starter - LHP Jacob Schlesener - had not allowed a hit and struck out five through his first three innings. Since the game is canceled, those stats will not count.
The game was delayed for roughly an hour and 40 minutes before the decision was finally made.
As a result of the cancellation, this marks the Cardinals' second consecutive series sweep. It is the first time Johnson City has accomplished that feat since they swept back-to-back three-game series at Elizabethton and at home against Burlington from August 3-9 of 2014.
Johnson City returns home on Saturday to open up a four-game series against the Elizabethton Twins, the rookie affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. RHP Zach Prendergast (1-0, 3.00 ERA) is expected to take the hill for the Redbirds in the series opener. Elizabethton has not yet named their starter for the contest.
The Cardinals Pre-Game Show will kick off the broadcast at 6:45 p.m. ET, leading up to the 7:00 p.m. ET start at TVA Credit Union Ballpark. Saturday evening's contest can be heard on JCCardinals.com or via the TuneIn Radio and MiLB First Pitch apps.
Following tomorrow's game will be the final Postgame Fireworks Show of the season presented by the Washington County Sheriff Litter Control.
Single-game tickets are still available and can be purchased online at JCCardinals.com or by calling the Cardinals' Ticket Office at (423) 461-4866.
