BURLINGTON, NC - The Johnson City Cardinals were looking for their first win after being swept in a four-game series against Elizabethton. The Cardinals fought hard, but would lose on a walkoff walk to the Burlington Royals.
Dionis Zamora got the start for the Cardinals. Zamora did not factor into the decision but he went 5.2 innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs, and two strikeouts.
The Cardinals got the scoring started in the top of the fourth when Nolan Gorman led off with a triple. Leandro Cedeno then hit a groundball to Royals shortstop Jeison Guzman, who committed a throwing error, which allowed Gorman to score and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Royals would get two back in the bottom of the fourth, but Johnson City exploded for four runs in the top of the fifth. After a walk and a single from Moises Castillo and Donivan Williams, Jonatan Machado hit an RBI single to score Castillo. Nolan Gorman then hit a two-RBI double to make the score 4-2. Then with two outs, Carlos Soto hit an RBI single to make it 5-2.
Burlington would score three in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game at five. In the bottom of the ninth, with the bases loaded the Royals won 6-5 on a walkoff hit batsman.
The Cardinals used two pitchers after Dionis Zamora. David Oca was the first reliever used, he went 2.1 innings, allowed two hits and one earned run, and blew his second save of the season. Jake Syvester came in, in the bottom of the ninth with the game tied and surrendered a bases loaded walkoff walk.
