The Kingsport Mets dropped a tough 9-7 decision to the Bluefield Blue Jays on Monday evening.
Bluefield had the bats working early and often as they were able to scratch across two runs in the first, one in the second, and two in the fourth, pouncing on Kingsport starter Garrison Bryant.
The Jays' hot bats kept hitting throughout the game, including plating a pair of runs in the sixth and again in the ninth.
The big offensive star for Bluefield was DH Hagen Danner, who finished 3-3 with three runs scored and a RBI. Cal Stevenson and Alejandro Kirk also had two hits apiece.
The Mets were able to keep it close thanks to a trio of two-run homers.
The first was off the bat of Luis Santana in the first inning, giving the Mets' #27 prospect four homers and 35 RBIs on the season.
The next two homers came in a four-run sixth. The first was an absolute tape measure shot off the bat of Shervyen Newton to dead left. The blast was well over 400 feet and good for Newton's fifth homer and 22nd RBI.
Then three batters later Kenny Hernandez connected to straight away right for his first homer of the season to cut the deficit at the time to just one at 7-6.
With the Mets down 9-6 in the 9th, Kingsport was able to rally. Jarred Kelenic ripped a two-out single to score Guillermo Granadillo to cut the deficit to two. After a Shervyen Newton walk, Luis Santana represented the potential winning run, but he was retired on a sharp ground ball to second to the end the game.
The Mets and Jays will battle in the rubber match tomorrow evening. It's $2 Tuesday's at Hunter Wright Stadium, where fans can partake in $2 hot dogs, sodas, and beer. In addition they can bring their Food City receipts to the ticket window to receive $2 GA tickets (up to four).
Also, it's School Spirit Night at the park, where the Mets are excited to welcome the students, staff, and parents from Palmer Center, Jefferson, & Johnson Elementary Schools. School Spirit Night is presented by Kingsport City Schools
