Legends get first win, 5-2 over Augusta

April 7, 2013

(AUGUSTA, Ga.)  The Lexington Legends earned their first win of 2013 with a 5-2 victory over the host Augusta GreenJackets Sunday afternoon.  Michael Antonio's two-run double in the eighth inning against reliever Steven Okert broke a 2-2 tie.

The Legends took an early lead with a run in the top of the first inning.  A two-out walk to Bubba Starling, a single by Cam Gallagher and a single by Antonio produced a run.

Augusta took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fourth.   With a runner at second and two outs, shortstop Raul Mondesi threw wide to first after fielding Stephen Branca's ground ball.  The error allowed Mitch Delfino, who was on at second base, to score the tying run.  The GreenJackets then took the lead when Chuck Jones singled, scoring Branca.

The Legends tied the game in the fifth on a one-out triple by Terrance Gore and a sacrifice fly by Ethan Chapman.

The score remained 2-2 until the top of the eighth.  Mondesi led off the inning with a single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Humberto Arteaga.    Starling reached on a throwing error by Delfino, the third baseman, as Mondesi held at second.  Gallagher lined out to right field, setting the stage for Antonio's tie-breaking drive over the head of Branca in left field.

The Legends' team speed helped add a final run in the ninth.  With one out, Gore reached first base on an error by shortstop Matt Duffy.  Gore stole second, went to third on an infield out and scored on Mondesi's infield single.

The GreenJackets put two men on base with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Ben Turner grounded into a double play to end the game.

Clayton Schulz (1-0), who worked the sixth and seventh innings after relieving starter Colin Rodgers, got the win.  Okert (0-1) took the loss.

Augusta had won the first three games of the series.

The Legends open the home season Monday night at Whitaker Bank Ballpark against the Asheville Tourists.  Game time is 7:05 p.m.
