'Royal' treatment: Promotions offer fun, variety

February 22, 2013
(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) The Lexington Legends are promising fans "the Royal treatment" in 2013, the Legends' first season as an affiliate of the Kansas City Royals.

New promotions at Whitaker Bank Ballpark will involve entertainment, giveaways and Royals-connected special appearances. Hall of Famer Gaylord Perry will be among those visiting the ballpark, with others to be announced.

Perry, who won 314 major league games, finished his 22-year pitching career with the Royals in 1983. He will be at Whitaker Bank Ballpark, Saturday, May 11, when the Legends meet the West Virginia Power at 7:05 p.m.

The likeness of another Hall of Fame member, George Brett, will be featured in a series of three bobblehead giveaways - May 31, June 21 and July 12, all Fridays. Brett, who was with the Royals for his entire career, is the only player to win batting championships in three different decades.

Among other giveaway nights: Saturday, June 1, the first 1,000 fans to enter the ballpark will receive a free beach towel. And just in time for a new school year, a lunchbox will be given to all fans age 12 and under on Friday, August 9.

Some of minor league baseball's hottest entertainment acts will add to the excitement. Team Ghost Riders will make their first appearance at Whitaker Bank Ballpark Thursday, June 20. Fans will see a wild west rodeo-style event with a twist -- monkeys riding dogs. The Fur Circus, a circus-themed mascot act, will appear August 9, and the famous Cat in the Hat will be at the ballpark April 19.

"We're really excited about starting our first season as a Royals affiliate," said Legends General Manager Seth Poteat. "Our fans certainly deserve the 'Royal treatment' for their great support of the Legends. We have our best lineup of giveaways in years. We're really looking forward to Gaylord Perry's appearance, and he won't be the only Hall of Famer to visit Whitaker Bank Ballpark this year."

Fans also will find traditional favorites such as fireworks and weekly money-saving themes throughout the 70-game home schedule.

There are 16 Ford Fireworks nights scheduled this season, the first on Opening Night, Monday, April 8.

Other Ford Fireworks nights are scheduled for April 13, April 20, April 27, May 11, May 31, June 21, June 22, July 3, July 12, July 13, July 26, July 27, August 9, August 24 and August 31.

Legends games have always provided low-cost family entertainment, and weekly promotions will again offer special discount prices on a variety of food and beverages.

Mondays: At every Monday night home game, kids eat free, presented by Members Heritage Federal Credit Union. Each child age 12 or under will receive a voucher good for a healthy "Better Bites" combo.

Tuesdays: Tuesday night is 36-cent hot dog night. The price is in recognition of the Ford F-150 being the number one selling vehicle for 36 consecutive years.

Wednesdays: New this year, Wednesday home games will begin at 12:05 p.m. Fans are invited to enjoy Wednesday afternoons at the ballpark for a Business Day Special. The Wednesday afternoon games also are expected to be a popular choice for day camp outings.

Thursdays: Continuing a long-standing tradition, beer and Pepsi products are available for one dollar each on "Thirsty Thursdays," sponsored by West Sixth Brewing Company.

Sundays: Every Sunday home game is a JIF Kids Club Sunday. Kids Club members receive special benefits such as t-shirts, discounts at the Legends merchandise store and many more. (More information is available at lexingtonlegends.com.) Kids run the bases after each Sunday home game.

As always, Legends' promotions will include recognition of service and worthy causes, such as Military Appreciation Night Saturday, July 27 and Breast Cancer Awareness Night Friday, July 12.

Education days, on which games begin at 10:05 a.m., are scheduled for April 10, April 29 and May 15.

The Legends open the home season Monday, April 8 at 7:05 p.m. against the Asheville Tourists, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies.

Individual game tickets will go on sale March 16 at the Legends Fan Fest, scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Whitaker Bank Ballpark. Season seats and the popular eight-game mini-plans are on sale now. For more information, visit www.lexingtonlegends.com or call the Legends box office at (859) 422-7867.
